Brits Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (the geniuses behind AbFab) have been vocal about the lack of women in comedy for some time now. Last year, Dawn French taped a great documentary for the BBC called “Girls Who Do Comedy.” The special was uploaded in bits to YouTube and it’s truly worth the time for anyone who appreciates funny women (which, of course, should be anyone reading this).
Dawn French is adorable as she interviews Ruby Wax, Morwenna Banks, Sheila Hancock, Jo Brand, Kathy Burke, Gina Yashere, Meera Syal, Lisa Tarbuck, Jennifer Saunders, Eleanor Bron, Laura Solon, Jessica Stevenson, Catherine Tate, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Mel and Sue, Jenny Éclair, Linda Smith, Jo Caulfield, Tracy Ulman, Sandra Bernhard, Miss Piggy, Whoopi Goldberg, Miriam Margolyes, Joan Rivers, Margaret Cho, Rita Rudner, Penny Marshall, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Kathy and Mo, and Phillis Diller.
